Manila Hostage Memorial March – 29th Aug, 2010

A former Philippine National Police officer took a bus carrying a Hong Kong tour group hostage. The twelve hour ordeal ended in a bloody shoot out that resulted in 7 hostages being killed and seven more in a critical condition after a failed, bungled attempt to rescue them by the Philippine SWAT team unfolded live on international media. Hongkonger’s, angry at the ill-prepared and thought out rescue that resulted in such a high number of casualties, call for an investigation as to why a highly trained anti-terrorist squad was kept on standby whilst a lesser trained and equipped police SWAT team took the lead role.

An estimate 80,000 people took to the streets on Sunday 29th August to demand a thorough investigation and to remember the victims.
